For a long time, the only leveling guides available to Warcraft players were dinky little e-books which were filled with limitations. To simply read the guide, players had to do one of three things: go in and out of the game constantly with alt-tab, print the guide out which took hundreds of pages, or use a second monitor which only a few players had. Then they had to scan over the game map trying to find specified locations using coordinates.As you can imagine, this frustated players to no end, but because it was the only thing available at the time they put up with it. Then came along a man who didn't want players to just put up with it. He wanted them to expect more from guidemakers and more value for their money.
That man was John "Zygor" Cook, a professional World of Warcraft player who at the time was becoming well-known for maxing out dozens of characters at unbelievable speeds. Zygor would post the results of his speed runs on the official Warcraft forums and he was constantly being asked by players for tips and strategies on how to level as fast as he did. So Zygor decided to write his own leveling guide.The secret to Zygor's success was that he had played the game since it was in beta, learned every quest inside and out, and devised a mathematically precise questing path that kept in only the most speed effecient quests, while leaving out all the junk quests intended to slow players down.
The only problem was that all of this information was being drawn from his memory. In other words, Zygor leveled so fast because he didn't have to go out of game, read instructions, look up coordinates, and scan a map for the location, he just knew where to go from years of experience. Because of this, an ebook guide could never truly replicate his leveling methods.
